Together, we’re growing the next generation of rural healthcare workers.
Since 1998, the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health, part of the University of Sydney, School of Nursing, has been funded by the Commonwealth Government to support health students in our region. As part of their studies, these university students undertake a rural placement in our local health and community services. We provide accommodation, social networking, interprofessional learning and wellbeing support.
By completing a placement in our footprint, students get to see the joys of outback life, while also learning about the benefits and complexities of working in rural health.
Our Campuses
Placement Opportunities
Across the Broken Hill, Bourke and Wentworth regions of New South Wales, and in collaboration with our university partners and local health sites, we offer high-quality placement programs for students in fields such as medicine, nursing, social work, pharmacy, medical imaging, dentistry and allied health.

Medical placements in the Far West will expose you to diverse patient groups and the unique challenges of rural healthcare. Students participate in a range of placements, including general practice, hospital ward duties, and on-call shifts, with curriculum requirements varying by university. Don’t forget the rich and inclusive social life that goes along with a medicine placement in Broken Hill.

Nursing
Discover the unique rewards of rural healthcare with nursing placements at BHUDRH. We offer both short-term and extended placements, tailored to all levels of nursing students, providing hands-on experience in dynamic rural and remote health settings.

Allied Health
At the BHUDRH, we offer allied health placements in Social Work, Dietetics (ICM / FSM/ CPHN), Speech Pathology (Paediatric/Adult), Occupational Therapy (Paediatric/Adult), Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology (Healthy Populations/Clinical), Exercise Science (Healthy Populations), Medical Imaging, Psychology, Paramedics and Podiatry.

Pharmacy
Pharmacy placements expose students to a variety of settings such as community pharmacy, aged care and Aboriginal Health Services, giving you a comprehensive understanding of rural pharmacy practice.

Research
The department’s research capacity is a vital component of the Far West region’s commitment to rural health, with a significant academic network centred in Broken Hill. Our research team focuses on addressing the unique health challenges faced by rural and remote communities, while also contributing to the global health research landscape. Through collaborative research initiatives, we aim to deepen our understanding of rural health disparities, workforce challenges and improved health outcomes not only in Australia but across the globe.

Testimonial
“If you’re hesitant about a rural placement, I’d say go for it! You’ll be surprised by how much there is to explore. The BHUDRH team is incredibly supportive, they even helped me with camping gear and organising weekend trips. I would also say to make the most of the opportunity – it’s a unique and rewarding experience”
