Deepening our understanding of rural health disparities and improving health outcomes

Guided by our research framework, the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health supports practical, community-focused research that addresses the real challenges of rural and remote health. Through research training, collaboration and innovation, we respond to complex rural health challenges and contribute evidence that helps to shape healthcare delivery, policy and education in Australia and beyond.

Why research matters in rural health

Rural and remote communities experience unique health challenges – from workforce shortages to access, distance and equity. Research plays a critical role in understanding these disparities and developing practical, place-based solutions that lead to better health outcomes.

At the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health, research is extremely important to us. Our work is grounded in real communities, real systems and real needs, with a clear focus on improving health outcomes for people living and working in rural and remote Australia.

What we research and how we work

The department employs a number of research-active academics whose work focuses on rural and remote health challenges, including rural workforce issues, service delivery models and community-led health outcomes. Our research contributes to both the national and global evidence base for rural health.

Collaboration is central to how we work. We partner closely with organisations such as the Far West Local Health District, Western NSW Local Health District and First Nations communities to ensure research priorities are locally relevant and aligned with community needs.

We are committed to strengthening self-determination in research by working alongside communities to shape priorities, approaches and outcomes. This ensures research is not only academically rigorous, but meaningful, ethical and impactful.
