Autonomy and Support on a Rural Placement

Today, the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health are visiting dental students completing an eight-week placement at the clinic.

On arrival, we’re greeted by student supervisors and health service staff, working together to keep the clinic running smoothly and ensuring patients are ready for their appointments.

Rachel, a fourth-year University of Sydney dental student, sits alongside her supervisor, listening intently as they discuss a recent case. Her supervisor takes the time to guide her through the details, answering questions and offering insights. Down the hall, Sung Uh, also a fourth-year student, is in a consultation room, carefully writing her case notes. Her supervisor and LHD staff allowing her to spend 20 minutes ensuring everything is documented before her next patient arrives.

These interactions highlight both the autonomy and support that define a rural placement experience.

“I have received so much support from the staff. The cases are more complex, and we’re encouraged to see our patients through their whole healthcare journey,” Sung Uh said.

Rachel shared a similar experience.

“Something I found most valuable was the clinical educator we had. He is a great mentor,” she said.

After their 9 to 4, Monday to Friday clinic days, the pair make time to immerse themselves in the region.

“A social aspect I’ve loved was going camping on weekends,” Rachel said.

“I’ve taken up golf. Broken Hill has a really great course,” Sung Uh added.

Before wrapping up, we asked what they would say to students hesitant about a rural placement.

“Just do it. Expect great people and good vibes,” they said.
